Common Core Math: Grade 8: Geometry

In eighth grade, students explore congruence and similarity in the context of transformations of two-dimensional figures in the coordinate plane, including rotations, reflections, translations and dilations. Students explore which transformations preserve the dimensions of the original figure (rotations, reflections and translations) and which transformations produce a scaled image that is similar, but not congruent, to the original figure (dilations). Students explore and justify properties of triangles, including the Pythagorean theorem, and use right triangles to compute distances between points in the plane. Students also compute volumes of three-dimensional solids (cylinders, cones and spheres).
