Common Core Math: Grade 8
In eighth grade, students expand their knowledge of rational numbers to include irrational numbers such as pi or the square root of 2, filling out the entire set of real numbers. Students use exponent laws to simplify expressions and perform computations using scientific notation. Students also solve equations, including those with exponents or radicals, and systems of two equations. The concept of functions is introduced. Students identify and represent functions numerically, graphically and algebraically and use linear functions to model associations in two-dimensional data. Students also explore congruence and similarity in the context of transformations of two-dimensional figures, apply the Pythagorean theorem, and compute volumes of cylinders, cones and spheres.
