Common Core Math: Grade 6: Expressions & Equations

In sixth grade, students write and evaluate expressions with exponents and variables, including commonly known formulas such as those for the area and volume of common shapes. Students use mathematical vocabulary—such as term, factor and coefficient—to identify parts of expressions and equations. Students manipulate expressions and identify when two expressions are equivalent. Students verify solutions to equations and inequalities by substituting a possible solution for the variable and solve one-step equations algebraically. Students represent solutions to inequality statements on number line diagrams. Students also explore real-world examples of relationships between two quantities, distinguishing between independent and dependent variables and relating real-world scenarios to their representations as equations and graphs.
